‘What are you hiding?’ LoP Atishi asks BJP on Delhi Budget; writes to Speaker for two days of discussion- Dilli Dehat se

Delhi Budget 2025: Delhi Leader of Opposition and Aam Aadmi Party MLA Atishi has written to Speaker Vijender Gupta, questioning the newly-elected BJP government’s decision to allocate ‘barely one hour’ time for discussions on the Delhi budget at the House.

In the letter shared by news agency ANI, Atishi claimed that the ‘List of Businesses’ on Wednesday at the state assembly was too large to discuss Delhi budget 2025 for even one hour.

“Late last night I received the List of Business for today, ie., 26th March 2025 (enclosed). I was astounded to see that the List of Business has so many items that barely one hour of discussion would be possible on the Budget,” she said.

With the standard discussions and breaks during the six-hour long session from 11 am, Atishi claimed that it left only three hours for legislators to have discussions “on the Budget, on the CAG report, a short duration discussion under Rule 55 on water shortage and water logging, a motion under Rule 107, adoption of 2 reports of Assembly Committees, as well as financial papers to be laid down by the Hon’ble Chief Minister.”

What did Atishi say in her letter to Speaker?

Writing further, the AAP MLA from Kalkaji questioned how the legislators were supposed to discuss budget for such a short period of time.

“How can a Budget be discussed in this manner? Will an Assembly of 70 MLAS spend barely one hour in discussing the Annual Budget? Will it be sandwiched between 5 other agenda items?”

“It almost seems that the Government wants to avoid a detailed discussion on the Budget. This is deeply worrying,” Atishi added.

What did Atishi ask the Speaker to do?

“It is beginning to seem as if the Government wants to hide something. What is the economic data and analysis in the Economic Survey that the Government does not want to bring to ligh,” Atishi asked.

She requested the Speaker to help devote the next two days of the Assembly session to Budget discussions only.

“Sir: as the Speaker, it is your responsibility to ensure the sanctity of parliamentary procedures and ethos. It is requested that the next 2 days should be devoted solely to the discussion on the Budget. The remaining. discussion and business can be kept on 28th March or the session maybe extended by a day, if needed,” she said.

What are you hiding? Atishi asks BJP

Speaking to ANI later on Wednesday, the AAP leader posed the same questions to the BJP.

“The budget session is to present budget and hold a discussion on budget but yesterday, when the list of business for today came, only one hour was allotted for discussion on budget,” she said.

“I want to ask BJP, what are you hiding? Why don’t you want a discussion on budget? This clearly shows there is something wrong. I have written to Speaker Vijender Gupta and demanded at least two days for discussions on budget,” Atishi added.
